Bungo Stray Dogs

  This season covers the Port Mafia Arc and teases the Guild Arc. The first half introduces the anime’s main characters and main villains (for this arc/season). It starts with orphan Atsushi Nakajima after he has been kicked out of his orphanage. By the river bank, he meets an odd man named Osamu Dazai and his workmate Doppo Kunikida. They treat him to a meal and reveal that they are part of the renowned special ability organization named the Armed Detective Agency (ADA). They also reveal that they are on the hunt for a white tiger that has been wreaking havoc. Since Atsushi infers that the tiger has been following him, he accompanies Dazai to a warehouse that they determined to be the beast’s next stop. There, it is revealed that the white tiger is Atsushi in his ability form. Dazai uses his nullification ability to prevent Atsushi from attacking him and waits for the rest of the Agency members to arrive. The first half focuses on introducing the rest of the Agency and some members of the opposing organization, the Port Mafia (PM). The second half focuses on Atsushi’s attempts to save the Port Mafia’s assassin Kyoka Izumi from the Mafia’s, specifically Ryunosuke Akutagawa’s, influence. After a battle between Atsushi and Akutagawa, the Agency succeeds in recruiting Kyoka. Earlier in the season, it was stated that the PM’s motivation to kidnap Atsushi was due to a bounty placed on him. By the end of the season, it is revealed to be placed by The Guild, the second season’s main villain.

  hThe first four episodes mark the start of the anime adaptation of the light novels. In this season, it covers the Dark Age arc, delving into Dazai’s past in the Port Mafia. The viewers learn the reason behind Dazai’s departure from the organization and his transfer to the ADA. The rest of the season focuses on the tri-organization war between the ADA, PM, and Guid. The Book’s existence is introduced as a blank book with pages that can turn whatever is written into reality as long as it follows a consistent narrative. Fitzgerald, the Guild’s leader, aims to use this book to resurrect his dead daughter. To do so, he requires Atsushi’s presence due to his connection to the Book. Through Dazai’s manipulation of the situation, Atsushi and Akutagwa reluctantly team up to defeat the Guild. The season ends with Kyoka officially becoming a member and a teaser for the show’s next major villain.

  The last three seasons (as of January 2024) all focus on the Agency’s fight against Fyodor Dostoevysky and his associates. The third season starts with the adaptation of the light novel Dazai, Chuuya, Age Fifteen. These first three episodes focus on Dazai and Chuuya’s first meeting and the origin of their partnership. The rest of the season adapted the Cannibalism arc. Fyodor causes immense distress among the ADA and PM as he orders an ability user to place a virus onto the organization’s leader, rendering them bedridden. Once again, Atsushi and Akutagawa team up to defeat the enemy. Fyodor escapes unscathed until Dazai outsmarts him and has him arrested with the help of Fitzgerald.
  The fourth season starts with the adaptation of the light novel The Untold Origins of the Detective Agency. These first three episodes focus on Ranpo and Fukuzawa’s first meeting and the founding of the Agency as a result of their encounter. The rest of the season follows the ADA as they are on the run from the government ability user group named the Hunting Dogs after they are framed for various crimes. The Decay of Angels, the organization Fyodor is part of, is responsible for framing the ADA after using a page from the Book to rewrite the public’s perception of the Agency. The fifth season immediately follows this plot line. Ochi Fukuchi, the leader of the Hunting Dogs, is revealed to be the true leader of the Decay of Angels. Atsushi and Akutagawa team up once more to defeat him, but the battle ends with Akutagawa’s beheading and Fukuchi’s escape. A vampire in the Decay of Angels named Bram spreads his vampirism across Yokohama with Fukuchi’s control. While all of this is taking place, Dazai is arrested and placed in jail with Fyodor. In a race to escape, Dazai wins and through his and Ranpo’s actions, the vampirism stops and Fukuchi dies in Fukuzawa’s arms. All of this along with Fyodor’s apparent demise gives the impression that all is well once more, however, the season ends with a scene of a ruined battlefield and Atsushi and a visibly undead Akutagawa fighting against an unknown being.

• Atsushi Nakajima - Beast Beneath the Moonlight:
    Atsushi is the main character of the story. His ability tranforms him into a white tiger. The story starts with his initiation into the Agency. He faces many trials and tribulations due to his apparent connection to the mysterious Book. He is constantly paired up with Port Mafia member Akutagawa through Dazai's manipulation in hopes of recreating Double Black (Soukoku).
• Osamu Dazai - No Longer Human:
    Dazai is a former Port Mafia member that joined the Agency in hopes of fulfilling his late friend Odasaku's final wish. His ability is unique as it serves as an anti-ability with its nullification. Those he comes in contact with cannot use their abilities. Due to his executive position in the Port Mafia, members would reference their past experiences with him. He had a large influence in certain members. His actions are what drive the majority of the plot.
• Kunikida Doppo - The Matchless Poet:
    Kunikida is the most trusted member of the Agency. According to Fukuzawa, he is next in line to become head of the Agency. His ability allows him to create anything he writes on notebook provided that is the same size as it.
• Ranpo Edogawa - "Super Deduction":
    Ranpo is a rare non-ability user in the Agency. Despite his lack of a supernatural ability, his intellect places him above most ability users. His immense intelligence allows him to solve any case with little to no evidence. The Agency was created by Fukuzawa to help Ranpo better understand his abilities.
• Yosano Akiko - Thou Shalt Not Die:
    Yosano used to be under Mori's wing until Ranpo recruited her into the Agency. Her ability makes her coveted by most as she can heal the wounds of anyone as long as they are still alive.
• Kenji Miyazawa - Undefeated by the Rain:
    Kenji's ability gives superhuman strangth whenever he is hungry.
• Yukichi Fukuzawa - All Men Are Equal:
    Fukuzawa is president of the Agency. He founded it after meeting Ranpo and wanted to create a space wherein Ranpo can flaunt his abilites with the protection of ability users. His ability allows his subordinates to exercise the abilities with ease.
• Kyoka Izumi - Demon Snow:
    Kyoka was a former assasin at the Port Mafia. She joined the Agency after Atsushi saved her. Her ability is generational, meaning it was passed down to her after her mother died. The ability summons a samurai that follows the orders given throught Kyoka's phone.
• Junichiro Tanizaki - Light Snow:
    Tanizaki's ability allows him to cast a light snow that obstructs the vision of his opponents. He assisted in Atsushi's entrance exam.
• Naomi Tanizaki - N/A:
    Naomi is another non-ability user in the Agency. She is simply interning to stay close to her brother Junichiro.

• Chuuya Nakahara - Upon the Tainted Sorrow:
    Chuuya is a current executive at the Port Mafia. His ability allows him to manipulate the gravity of any object he touches. He was Dazai's ex-partner during his time in the Mafia. Although no longer partners, Chuuya still places immense trust in Dazai and vice versa. His ability reaches new heights when he activates Corruption. It puts him in a destructive state that can only be nullified with Dazai's ability. This teamwork conned the duo's title as Double Black (Soukoku).
• Ryunoske Akutagawa - Rashomon:
    Akutagawa is Atsushi's main rival throughout the entire series. His ability transforms his black coat into a beast that attacks under his control. He is still heavily impacted by Dazai's influence even after his departure from the Port Mafia. Dazai constantly pushes Akutagawa to team up with Atsushi in hopes of creating a new Double Black.
• Ichiyo Higuchi- N/A:
    Higuchi is Akutagawa's subordinate that specializes in using guns.
• Koyo Ozaki - Golden Demon:
    Koyo is a current executive of the Port Mafia. She was Kyoka's guardian before she left and still deeply cares for her. Her ability has the same nature as Kyoka's.
• Ryuro Hirotsu - Falling Camellia:
    Hirotsu is the leader of the Black Lizard in the Port Mafia. His ability allows him to send anything he touches flying backwards.
• Gin Akutagawa - N/A:
    Gin is a non-ability user who leads the battalion of the Black Lizard. She is also Akutagawa's sister.
• Ogai Mori - Vita Sexualis:
    Mori is the leader of the Port Mafia. His ability summons Elise, a young girl that attacks for him. He recruited Dazai and urged him to recruit Chuuya as well.
• Michizo Tachihara - Midwinter Memento:
    Tachihara is a member of the Black Lizard. His ability allows him to control metal. It is later revealed that he is a member of the government-driven special ability force named the Hunting Dogs. He was intially sent to spy on the Mafia's doings, however he grew an attachment to his comrades.
• Motojiro Kajii - Lemonade:
    Kajii's ability allows him to construct lemon bombs that he is unaffected by.
• Kyusaku Yumeno (Q) - Dogra Magra:
    Q is a member of the Port Mafia that used to be imprisoned due to their extremely dangerous ability. Their ability makes it so that anyone who harms them physically will be cursed to wildly attack the people around them.
